Get Prepared with First Aid Training: From CPR to Mental Health First Aid

Did you know there are a variety of First Aid Training available for many different settings? First Aid training is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on your profession, hobby, or particular set of circumstances, various types of training can be beneficial and, in some cases, lifesaving.

In this article, we cover five different kinds of First Aid; Basic First Aid / CPR, Advanced Life Support, Marine First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, and Mental First Aid.

Whether you're an EMS professional, lifeguard, outdoor enthusiast, or simply someone interested in safety, understanding the nuances between different First Aid courses can be crucial.

From the key aspects that set each type apart to the unique equipment that comes into play, here's a closer look at the different types of First Aid training available - and how to find the right tools and resources to ensure you're prepared in any emergency.

First Aid Basics / CPR Certification

The most basic type of First Aid training is one that everyone should consider investing in: First Aid Basics or CPR certification. These courses focus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other basic techniques that can help to stabilize a patient before professional help is able to arrive.

Imagine a scenario where you come across someone having a medical emergency. Whether they are a child at the beach or a senior adult facing a medical emergency in public, it’s easy to feel a sense of helplessness in the face of the situation.

First Aid Basics covers the initial steps to take in various emergencies, including managing wounds, immobilizing fractures, and assisting choking victims. On the other hand, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training equips individuals with the techniques to help someone who has stopped breathing or whose heart has stopped beating until professional help arrives.

Who Should Consider First Aid Basics?

CPR and basic First Aid training benefit everyone, regardless of profession. Parents, teachers, coaches, office workers, and community members can all benefit from knowing these foundational skills. In many professions, this certification is a prerequisite

  • Basic First Aid Kits: A must-have in every home, car, or workplace. Basic first aid kits contain essential items like bandages, antiseptics, and gauze pads.

  • CPR Manikins: Used during training sessions to practice CPR techniques effectively.

  • AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators): These devices can provide an electric shock to the heart, potentially saving a life during sudden cardiac arrest.

Understanding these basics prepares individuals to confidently face many of the common emergencies they might encounter in daily life. You never know when you may need to step in and help someone in need. It is essential to stay informed and be prepared.

Advanced: ALS (Advanced Life Support), BLS (Basic Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

When lives hang in the balance, quick and proficient action can make all the difference. The training provided through American Red Cross's modern, adaptive Resuscitation Suite™ is designed for healthcare providers and public safety professionals, equipping them with the latest science-based knowledge to improve outcomes in those crucial moments.

Advanced courses cover a variety of different scenarios and potential emergencies, such as cardiac arrest and stroke, drowning, suffocation, burns, electric shock, trauma, and more.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS): Provides foundational medical skills and understanding for emergency care.

  • Advanced Life Support (ALS): A more comprehensive training that goes beyond cardiac care, including guidelines based on ILCOR (International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation), but extends further, making the Red Cross curriculum unique and more robust.

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS): Focuses on the specific needs and challenges of providing emergency care to children.

These courses not only meet but often exceed the standard requirements, featuring evidence-based peer reviews from renowned institutions like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Department of Defense Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care.

Who Should Consider Advanced First Aid Training?

Healthcare providers, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, and any public safety professional required to administer first aid and other emergency medical procedures.

One of the benefits of investing time and resources into an advanced first aid course is the certifications and recognitions that come along with successful completion:

  • Airway Management Tools: Vital for ALS training, these tools help ensure unobstructed breathing in emergencies.

  • Bleeding Control Kits: Quickly control severe bleeding with tourniquets, hemostatic dressings, and gloves.

  • Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs): Use AEDs to restart a person's heart during sudden cardiac arrest.

  • Advanced First Aid Kits: These contain more specialized items such as tourniquets, hemostatic agents, and more.

By undergoing Advanced Life Support training, first responders and healthcare providers are not just meeting but surpassing industry standards. It's not just about checking boxes; it's about preparing for the realities of life-saving procedures.

Marine First Aid

The marine environment poses its own unique challenges and risks when it comes to emergency situations. Whether you're a seasoned sailor, fisherman, or simply enjoying a day out on the water, Marine First Aid training can equip you with the skills necessary to address medical emergencies while at sea.

Marine First Aid focuses on the medical issues most likely to occur in a marine environment. This includes treatment for hypothermia, sunburn, seasickness, and injuries related to marine life. The training also covers essential skills like calling for help using marine radios and administering aid when professional medical help is far away.

Who Should Consider Marine First Aid Safety Courses?

Anyone who spends a significant amount of time in marine environments, whether for work or leisure, would benefit from this training. This includes boat operators, fishermen, scuba divers, and even beach lifeguards responsible for oceanfront safety. Similarly, lifeguards and waterfront managers are more prepared to handle medical issues if they have completed a marine first aid course.

In addition, many countries require seafarers and other maritime workers to have this training before going out on the water. While the exact requirements vary by country, all seafarers should be familiar with basic medical procedures in order to ensure their safety at sea.

  • Waterproof First Aid Kits: A standard First Aid kit won't do on the water. You'll need a waterproof kit that can withstand marine conditions.

  • Flotation Devices: In addition to life jackets, specialized flotation devices can be crucial for rescues in the water. Spineboards and rescue discs are two examples of such devices.

  • Marine Radios: Knowing how to call for help in a marine emergency is just as important as knowing how to administer first aid. A reliable marine radio can make all the difference.

Navigating the open waters comes with its own set of challenges, making Marine First Aid an invaluable skill set to have. The last thing you want to worry about is not having the right safety equipment and procedures in place. Investing in quality first aid kits, flotation devices, and marine radios can make all the difference in a marine emergency.

Wilderness First Aid

When you're out in the wilderness, far from the conveniences of civilization, the importance of specialized first aid training cannot be overstated. Whether you're hiking, camping, or embarking on an extended outdoor adventure, Wilderness First Aid equips you with the skills to handle emergencies when professional medical help may be hours or days away.

Wilderness First Aid training focuses on immediate care in remote locations and includes unique challenges like varying weather conditions and limited resources.

The curriculum covers a wide range of scenarios, from snake bites and sprained ankles to more severe situations like fractures and hypothermia. The key is to create an emergency action plan that considers the environment, your resources, and your skill level.

Who Should Consider Wilderness First Aid Courses?

This training is essential for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, campers, and anyone who spends a significant amount of time in remote or wilderness areas. It's also ideal for guides and instructors who lead groups on outdoor excursions – including camp counselors, hunting guides, and park rangers – as well as search and rescue personnel.

  • Survival Kits: These kits go beyond standard first aid supplies, including items like fire starters, signal mirrors, and emergency blankets.

  • Splinting Tools: Compact and lightweight, these are crucial for immobilizing fractures or sprains.

  • Portable Water Purifiers: Access to clean water can be critical when dealing with an emergency in a remote location - so ensure you have a portable filter on hand.

Being prepared for the unexpected is the first step in ensuring a safe and enjoyable wilderness experience.

Mental First Aid

In an increasingly stressful and complex world, the importance of mental health is often underscored. Mental First Aid aims to equip individuals with the tools and knowledge to help someone who may be experiencing a mental health crisis or substance abuse problem.

It’s not a substitute for professional care, but it does offer immediate help until professional assistance can be provided - and often allows everyday individuals to step in and help in an emergency situation.

Mental First Aid involves learning about the signs and symptoms of an impending mental health crisis, as well as providing emotional support, helping people cope with stressors, connecting them to professional services and resources, and offering advice on self-care techniques. It also teaches effective communication skills, how to de-escalate a crisis, and when and how to direct someone toward professional help.

Who Should Consider Mental Health First Aid Courses?

Though particularly beneficial for healthcare providers, educators, and human resource professionals, this training is valuable for anyone who wants to better understand and support mental health—be it in the workplace, school, or community.

These courses provide a unique opportunity to learn about mental health, be better equipped to recognize signs of distress, and create a safe environment for those who need help.

  • Educational Materials: Books, pamphlets, and online resources can provide further understanding and protocols for dealing with mental health issues.

  • Quick Reference Cards: Handy for a fast review of the essential steps to take when helping someone in a mental health crisis.

  • Online Platforms: Specialized software or apps can provide immediate guidance or advice, sometimes featuring direct lines to professional help.

Mental First Aid is an emerging field, but it's gaining recognition for its significant impact on community and workplace health. While it may not require medical tools in the conventional sense, the resources provided by Kemp USA and other organizations are invaluable in equipping individuals with the knowledge and confidence they need to make a real difference.
